A new iOS always raises the same question for people who like taking pictures: is my camera app ready? DSLR Camera 12 arrived on the App Store alongside the new system, optimised for it, and focused on one idea: more control over a photo both before and after the shot.

  3. 48 MP capture and better tracking

01Ready for the new iOS

Apple began rolling out iOS 27 on 14 September 2026; Apple’s announcement lists what changes by device and region. DSLR Camera 12 was released the same week. The current version requires iOS 26 or later, so you do not need to update your iPhone on day one to use it.

The interface follows the Liquid Glass design across shooting, library and editing, and the photo editor has been redesigned with refreshed controls for adjustments, filters, crop, text and effects.

02Refocus and Aperture: decide after the shot

Two new tools work on photos you have already taken. With Refocus, on supported iPhones and compatible photos, you tap a detected subject to keep it sharp while the rest of the image softens, then adjust the intensity of the blur.

Aperture works on photos that contain depth information: choose where to focus and adjust the blur with a digital aperture control from f/16 to f/1.4. It is the language of a camera lens applied to a picture that already exists. Both tools depend on the device and on the photo, so expect them to appear only where they can work.

0348 MP capture and better tracking

On compatible iPhone cameras you can now capture at 48 MP, using a new format and resolution selector. Version 12 also improves AFC subject tracking and face detection, and preserves photo metadata and supported depth information more reliably.

Predictive Filters, the feature that suggests filters right after the shot, saves crops and filters more dependably too.

If you are new to the app, start with the DSLR Camera overview, then open Manual mode and take the same photo twice with different settings.
