On-device AI: organize your belongings with a private home inventory

01What does on-device AI mean?

The calculation happens on your device instead of sending the request to a developer’s AI server. Apple’s Foundation Models framework opened access to the on-device language model behind Apple Intelligence, allowing apps to use it for focused tasks. Model availability still depends on supported hardware, software and settings.

In Whery, a useful task is turning your description into proposed items and places. “The travel pillow is in the wardrobe and the luggage scale is in the hallway cupboard” contains two records. AI can help separate that information, but you should check the proposed names and locations before saving. The source of truth is what you actually put away.

02Local processing and iCloud do different jobs

Whery’s privacy policy explains that prompts, photos, audio, transcripts and model output are not sent to a developer AI service. Speech, photo analysis, search and AR processing use Apple frameworks on the device.

Your saved collection can also sync through your private iCloud database. That is a separate operation: “processed locally” does not mean “never leaves this phone”. Room scans have a separate sync setting, and deliberately sharing an item gives someone else a copy of the selected record. Choose those options according to how you want to use your archive.

Whery also offers optional anonymous usage analytics and crash reporting, described in its privacy policy. Saved item content is excluded, and sharing anonymous usage data can be switched off in Settings → Privacy.

03Is the collection useful offline?

The saved archive remains available offline. Internet access is still needed for operations such as downloading the app and syncing changes between devices. On-device AI also needs its supported model to be available; an offline archive is not a promise that every AI feature works in every configuration.
